Internal linking and site architecture explained
Internal links connect pages on the same site. Site architecture is the pattern those links form: navigation, categories, related content, and contextual cross-references. Crawlable links help search engines find pages, while their placement and descriptive anchor text give context about the destination. This factor concerns the relationships expressed by links, not simply how many clicks a page sits from the homepage; the latter is covered by crawl depth. Google's link guidance explains discovery and anchor text.
Impact details
Impact: High when important pages lack useful links. Google says links help discovery and relevance, and recommends internal-link findability for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page with no incoming internal link may be found through a sitemap, but loses a normal route and contextual signals. Links also inform Google's understanding of site structure and relative importance. These are discovery and interpretation mechanisms, not proof of measured AI citation gains. Proof & consensus details
Proof: Medium. Consensus: Strong. Google documents crawlable <a href> links, meaningful anchor text, and linked page relationships as useful for Search. Bing also asks for crawlable internal links and relevant anchor text in guidance covering Copilot. These sources establish a discovery and context pathway, not an isolated citation effect. Other AI crawlers publish less detail; identical processing cannot be assumed. Google's link guidance, AI feature guidance, and Bing Webmaster Guidelines.
Recommendation
Give every important page at least one relevant incoming internal link. Use navigation and category pages for broad routes, then add contextual links where another page genuinely helps the reader. Write concise, descriptive link text rather than repeated generic labels or forced keywords. Use ordinary <a href> links that resolve to real URLs; JavaScript-generated links can work when they appear in the rendered DOM in that form. Maintain the links when URLs change, and avoid a navigation design that exposes destinations only through a search box or click handler.

Audit instructions
- Choose important category and article pages. Follow visible links and check that they use working
<a href>elements with meaningful text. - Crawl the site and compare discovered URLs with the important-page list. Flag orphaned pages, broken destinations, generic anchor text, and unnecessarily long paths.
- Add or fix relevant links, then crawl again. Check indexing and AI citations separately; improved navigation does not guarantee recommendations.
