IndexNow is a protocol for notifying participating search engines when a site's URL is added, substantially updated, or deleted. Recommendation
First check whether your CMS, host, or plugin already submits changed URLs. If implementing it yourself, generate the required ownership key, publish the key file, and submit only URLs that were created, meaningfully updated, or deleted. Automate this from publication events, record responses, retry errors appropriately, and avoid resubmitting unchanged URLs. Keep ordinary internal links and sitemaps: notifications supplement discovery rather than replacing it.
AI platforms
Bing and Copilot: Bing participates in IndexNow and recommends it to help changed URLs reach its search pipeline. Bing describes faster update discovery for AI-powered experiences, without promising that a submitted page will be cited. Bing's guidance. Audit instructions
- Check whether the site or CMS has an IndexNow integration and whether its ownership key file is reachable. A key file alone does not prove that URLs were submitted.
- Publish or update one test URL, then inspect submission logs or Bing Webmaster Tools to confirm the exact URL was sent and accepted.
- Check whether the URL was later crawled or indexed, and correct submission errors. Track AI citations separately; API acceptance only confirms receipt.
