Crawl depth / key-page accessibility explained
Crawl depth is the minimum number of internal links a crawler must follow from a chosen starting page, commonly the homepage, to reach another page. Key-page accessibility asks whether priority pages can be reached at all through crawlable navigation and whether the path is practical. It is a reachability diagnostic, not a universal rule that every page must sit within a fixed number of clicks.
Impact details
Impact: Medium, rising when key pages are hidden. Google can use link distance and incoming links to infer relative importance. Pages reachable only through a search box may escape ordinary crawling. Google recommends internal-link findability for AI Overviews and AI Mode, whose supporting links require Search eligibility. These statements support accessible paths, but establish neither a universal depth threshold nor measured citation gains from shortening a path. Proof & consensus details
Proof: Medium. Consensus: Mixed. Google recommends navigation paths to important products and names link distance among several signals of relative importance. A sitemap or product feed can also reveal pages missed by links. Evidence is weaker for a numeric depth target, and AI-platform documentation does not isolate depth's effect on answer selection. The rating favors reachability and sensible prominence. Google's site-structure guidance and AI feature guidance.
Recommendation
Map the few pages most important to users and the business. Ensure each is reachable from the homepage or a relevant hub through visible, crawlable links; connect categories to subcategories and detail pages where that matches the site's content. Provide a direct route to especially important pages when it benefits users. Fix orphaned pages and paths that depend entirely on search forms or interactions a crawler may not perform. Use sitemaps as an additional discovery route, not as the only navigation for priority content. Avoid restructuring a useful site solely to meet an arbitrary click count.
AI platforms
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, accessible internal links help Google find important pages; supporting links must be indexed and snippet-eligible. No AI click-depth limit is published. Google's AI feature guidance and site-structure guidance.

Audit instructions
- Pick important pages and follow ordinary links from the homepage. Record how many clicks each page takes and flag pages reachable only through search, forms, or menus without normal links.
- Check that menus and category pages use working
<a href>links. Compare a site crawl with the list of important pages to find missing or unusually deep URLs. - Improve links to important pages, then repeat the path check. Review indexing and AI citations separately; click depth is a diagnostic, not a pass/fail score.
